Position Summaries

Graduate Consultants and Coordinators are graduate students employed as GAs, with health benefits and up to 9 credits of tuition waiver (Standard tuition only. No differentials. No fees) by the University of New Mexico’s Graduate Resource Center (GRC). Graduate Consultants and Coordinators hold a prestigious leadership and employment position that requires significant time, training, and dedication.

Graduate Consultants and Coordinators work closely with the GRC staff to support the programming and/or tutoring services offered to UNM graduate students. In collaboration with the Program Specialist of the GRC, Graduate Consultants and Coordinators perform the following responsibilities:

GRC Coordinator

  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services
  • Works with the GRC team to further develop and implement a vision for the program
  • Oversees appointment schedules for GRC graduate consultants
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Mentors GRC Location Supervisors
  • Works with GRC staff and consultants to plan and facilitate pre-semester and weekly trainings for GRC and CAPS student employees
  • Assists with data analysis and reporting
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Maintains an active GRC social media presence, which includes sharing GRC-specific information, curating materials and articles of interest for graduate students, and managing the GRC blog schedule
  • Represents the GRC in campus meetings and events
  • Disseminates accurate information to students and faculty regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Provides outreach to student groups, departments, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Writing Consultant/Dissertation Coach

  • Provides writing consultation in a variety of disciplines
  • Provides dissertation coaching within particular doctoral & research fellowships on campus
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Assists with data analysis and reporting
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Writing Consultant/Writing Groups

  • Provides writing consultation in a variety of disciplines
  • Facilitates graduate student writing groups
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Writing Consultant/Writing Camps

  • Provides writing consultation in a variety of disciplines
  • Coordinates graduate student writing camps
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Writing Consultant/GrOWL

  • Provides writing consultation primarily through the Graduate Online Writing Lab (GrOWL)
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Statistics Consultant

  • Provides statistics and quantitative data consultation in a variety of disciplines
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico

Graduate Student Workshop Coordinator

  • Develops and facilitates academic and professional workshops for graduate students
  • Assists in management of GRC peer education services, participating in creating and implementing a vision for the program
  • Works with full-time staff members on assignments and projects as needed
  • Presents to student groups, organizations, and classes on GRC-related services
  • Meets with representatives from UNM departments and programs to create and maintain links between GRC and other units
  • Creates outreach materials in a variety of media for GRC and GRC programs
  • Disseminates accurate information to students regarding services and programs offered by GRC
  • Uses a range of digital resources including computers, tablets, and social media platforms to enhance graduate learning at the University of New Mexico


Requirements for Consideration (for all positions)
  • Be a graduate student in good academic standing, enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours in a post-baccalaureate program at the University of New Mexico
  • Be available to work during Spring 2018 (January – May) and Fall 2018 (August - December)
  • Be available to work 20 hours a week during the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Be available for occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Attendance at Friday training meetings from 3-5pm during the semester
Additional Requirements for Dissertation Coach
  • Be an advanced PhD student
  • Maintain flexible hours to allow for on-call coaching of doctoral fellows
  • This position is only for 10 hours a week


Preferred Qualifications (for all positions)
  • Scholarly background and professional goals in alignment with the position
  • Excellent oral, written, electronic, interpersonal communication skills
  • High level of professionalism
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, initiative, ability to work independently, and enthusiasm for learning
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse team of peers and professionals
  • Ability to communicate with and value people with diverse academic skills, cultural backgrounds, and approaches to learning
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office—Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work in digital environments, including but not limited to social media platforms, learning management systems (such as UNM Learn), virtual chat rooms, etc.
Additional Qualifications for Graduate Statistics Consultant
  • Graduate degree in statistics, mathematics, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative analysis software
Additional Qualifications for Dissertation Coach
  • Ability to coach others through the dissertation writing process
