Tutor, SI Leader, Online Tutor, and Learning Strategist Position Summaries

(Hourly Rate: $11.00 Undergraduate Students, $12.50 Graduate Students)



Position Summaries

CAPS is the learning assistance program available to UNM students enrolled in undergraduate classes. Our mission is to enrich the academic climate at UNM and create lifelong learners. All the CAPS positions below are our direct student-support positions. Employees will attend weekly tranings so that they may become effective facilitators of student learning.

Tutor:

  • Tutors a variety of courses in particular disciplines
  • Facilitates student learning by helping students understand their learning process, redirecting questions, and modeling metacognitive strategies
  • Helps students develop transferable academic skills
  • Creates a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Plans/conducts discipline-specific workshops
  • Participates in CAPS training program/professional development opportunities
  • Creates learning strategies-based blog posts, research, marketing, and outreach
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as per CAPS/University policies

SI Leader:

  • Attends a particular section of a course (example: Chemistry 301 section 002)
  • Plans/facilitates collaborative learning opportunities for students in the course
  • Collaborates with faculty member
  • Serves as a liaison between academic departments and CAPS tutors
  • Participates in CAPS training program/professional development opportunities
  • Creates learning strategies-based blog posts, research, marketing, and outreach
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as per CAPS/University policies

Learning Strategist:

  • Provides learning strategies, which are defined as transferable skills that are non-content specific and can be used for any course work (i.e. time management, note taking, etc.)
  • Facilitates workshops, individual appointments, and drop-in to aid in the improvement of learning habits and skills and expose students to a variety of strategies
  • Assesses and makes recommendations for student development with respect to their academic goals
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other CAPS services and to services throughout the university
  • Creates learning strategies-based blog posts, research, marketing, and outreach
  • Participates in CAPS training program/professional development opportunities
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as per CAPS/University policies

Online Tutor:

  • Assists students who are taking online courses in UNM Learn
  • Provides academic support through text, audio, video, chat, and email in the Online Learning Center
  • Provides electronic writing feedback through email
  • Identifies and creates electronic resources such as blog posts and tutorial YouTube videos
  • Participates in CAPS training program/professional development opportunities
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as per CAPS/University policies

Requirements for Consideration

  • 10-30 hour work week
  • Attendance at pre-semester training (week before classes begin)
  • Attendance at Friday trainings (3pm-5pm) during the semester
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for the discipline in which you want to tutor/SI
    (Note: this must be reflected on the transcripts submitted with your application)
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours at the University of New Mexico in a degree-seeking program

  • Ability to think critically and develop creative solutions

  • Must maintain acceptable academic standing; advance towards academic degree
