Video Closed Captioning
What is it?
Most of us are familiar with Closed Captioning on videos via various platforms. Closed Captioning benefits anyone who may not have access to the audio included with recorded videos, including students who may be deaf or hard of hearing, students who might not be in a location where they can play a video with audio, students who might be learning new terminology or students accessing a video that was not created in their first language. Captions included with videos should be synchronized with the content of the video, the captions should be accurate to reflect dialogue. It is also best practice for narration to describe the actions in the video.
How to Edit Captions in Kaltura and MS Stream
Kaltura
When using Kaltura within UNM Canvas, all content is machine captioned. These machine captions should be reviewed and edited by the video creator. Kaltura also creates a transcript that is searchable and includes timestamps. *Note that only the video owner has the option to edit captions.
Microsoft Stream
Microsoft Stream creates machine captions for video/audio content and these captions are also editable. The captions should be reviewed by the video creator for accuracy.
YouTube
YouTube also creates auto-captions for content on the site. However, these machine captions are rarely accurate. A recommended course of action is to upload YouTube videos into Kaltura using the Add Media option. Kaltura will machine caption the video allowing you to update the captions.
