Request a class visit or an in-class learning strategies workshop
CLASS VISITS
These visits last 5-15 minutes and provide your students with an overview of the free services available to them. We can tailor these visits to your class, so let us know if you would like us to focus on certain CTL services that are particularly relevant to your class. Class visits are typically organized at the start of the semester, but please feel free to reach out and request a class visit at any time during the semester.
To arrange a class visit please contact Frances Jones, supervisor for Writing & Languages (jonesf@unm.edu).
IN-CLASS WRITING WORKSHOPS
CTL offers a variety of writing workshops that can be incorporated into your course and facilitated during your usual class time. Workshops cover a wide range of topics related to writing, including:
- Overview of the writing process
- Critical reading and thinking
- Introductions and thesis statements
- Organization and structure
- Navigating the research process
- Writing a methods section
- Writing a literature review
- Incorporating sources (paraphrasing and quoting)
- Formatting and citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago)
- Academic honesty and plagiarism
Workshops can be tailored to the specific writing projects your students are working on, and we can also design and develop new workshops based on suggestions and requests. Let us know what your students need, and we’ll see if we can arrange it! Availability of this service varies depending on tutor schedules.
To arrange an in-class workshop please contact Frances Jones, supervisor for Writing & Languages (jonesf@unm.edu).

IN-CLASS WRITING LABS
Writing labs are like hosting a writing drop-in session in your classroom. Your students bring in a writing project they are working on and devote class time to working on it. Our tutors will come to your classroom, facilitate the lab, and be available to answer questions and provide support as needed.
To arrange an in-class writing lab please contact Frances Jones, supervisor for Writing & Languages (jonesf@unm.edu).
IN-CLASS CONVERSATION GROUPS
Request a language tutor to come facilitate a conversation group during your regular class time (a great option if the instructor is not able to attend class but doesn’t want to cancel it). An in-class conversation group provides your students the opportunity to practice the language in a low-stakes, fun environment. The language tutor will provide conversation group activities, or the conversation group may be tailored to your class by requesting a specific theme or topic. You can also request a tutor to conduct a workshop on a specific language-related topic.Availability of this service varies depending on tutor schedules and level of expertise.
To arrange an in-class conversation group please contact Frances Jones, supervisor for Writing & Languages (jonesf@unm.edu).

Share Your Syllabus
We want our language and linguistics tutors to be prepared for specific course content that students are learning. Language and linguistics instructors, please share your syllabus with us so our tutors know what students are working on from week to week, especially if you plan to require your students to attend our services. You may also share rubrics or specific expectations to help our tutors tailor their support to best suit your students’ needs.
Email your syllabi and other course materials to Frances Jones (jonesf@unm.edu), Supervisor of the Writing & Languages team.
Require students to attend conversation groups or submit a writing assignment to the Online Writing Lab (OWL) or Graduate Online Writing Lab (GrOWL)
Requiring your students to use services such as Language Conversation Groups or the Online Writing Lab gives them credit for developing healthy learning habits and engages them in low-stakes activities where they can practice tasks and skills that boost their performance in your class.
If you plan on sending your class to the OWL or GrOWL, please give us a heads up. Contact Frances Jones, Supervisor for Writing & Languages or Jairo Marshall, Supervisor for Graduate Student Services to coordinate class writing requirements.
We can also provide Instructor Notification when entire classes are required to use our services. Please contact ctl@unm.edu Attn: Data Analyst, Data Manager, to set up Instructor Notifications.
