Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Become more efficient and effective in the way you study with the CTL Supplemental Instruction Program!
EMBEDDED TUTORING SUPPORT
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program is a team of trained tutors who are embedded in face-to-face, historically difficult courses. As embedded tutors, SI Leaders work closely with faculty to offer weekly review sessions beyond the classroom. All SI Leaders have previously taken their assigned course, earning a B+ or better and proving their mastery over the subject matter. Using the latest research in metacognitive learning strategies and instructional design principles, we also train our tutors to facilitate a supportive learning environment. SI Leaders attend every class and use the information to stay informed and build meaningful session plans. By doing this, they can create opportunities for students to discuss key concepts, compare notes, develop their study skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the content.
FOR FACULTY
Dedicated faculty are essential for high-quality SI experiences! SI faculty collaborate with our SILs to create meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom. Through one-on-one weekly meetings, the SIL and faculty can work together to fill the learning gaps, using the strength of peer support. If you are an instructor and interested in receiving Supplemental Instruction (SI) support for your course, please contact our SI Supervisor, Kyle Castro (kjcastro@unm.edu).
To help us with our hiring and planning process, requests should be made the semester before you need the support.
If you need tutor support for an online cousre, visit our CTL Online Learning Assistance program.
FOR STUDENTS
CTL Student Learning Assistance is successful because our student staff is dedicated to supporting the UNM community. Our SI Leaders (SIL) do that by providing small-group study sessions using researched-based learning techniques. Each session is tailored to direclty correspond with the topics covered in each of your classes for that week, giving you access to course content in real time.
