Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Become more efficient and effective in the way you study with the CTL Supplemental Instruction Program!
EMBEDDED TUTORING SUPPORT
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program is a team of tutors embedded in face-to-face, historically difficult courses. All SI Leaders have previously taken their assigned course, earning a B+ or better, proving their mastery over the subject. We also train our tutors to facilitate a supportive environment using research-based metacognitive learning strategies and instructional design principals. SI Leaders attend every class, build connections with their peers, and work closely with faculty to create meaningful sessions.
FOR FACULTY
Dedicated faculty are essential for high-quality SI experiences! SI faculty collaborate with our SILs to create meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom. Through one-on-one weekly meetings, the SIL and faculty can work together to fill the learning gaps, using the strength of peer support. If you are an instructor and interested in receiving Supplemental Instruction (SI) support for your course, please contact our SI Supervisor, Kyle Castro ( kjcastro@unm.edu).
To help us with our hiring and planning process, requests should be made the semester before you need the support.
If you need tutor support for an online cousre, visit our CTL Online Learning Assistance program.
Starting with the Spring 2026 semester, UNM will utilize a common faculty proposal form for the following programs:
- Peer Learning Facilitators (administered by the College Enrichment Program)
- Online Learning Assistants (administered by the Center for Teaching and Learning)
- Supplemental Instruction Leaders (administered by the Center for Teaching and Learning)
This common form will allow UNM to better support our faculty members by connecting their individual proposals to the academic support options most aligned with their curricular plans. As part of the selection process, program coordinators from each of the programs will review all applications together to determine which one(s) to offer to the instructor.
Fall 2026 proposal priority deadline: April 13, 2026. Proposals will be accepted for review until funding is exhausted.

CTL Student Learning Assistance is successful because our student staff is dedicated to supporting the UNM community. Our SI Leaders (SIL) do that by providing small-group study sessions three times a week. Each session is uniquely tailored to correspond with the topics covered in each class for that week, giving you access to course content in real time. By doing this, SILs give you an opportunity to discuss key concepts, compare notes, develop study skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the content together.
